Homeowners often think growing a lawn is easy. We drop a couple bags of fertilizer and put the sprinkler on it and think that’s all we need to do. Not true!
What is the first step in achieving a lush, healthy, green lawn? Water! We all need it to survive. The same is true for our lawns.
How often should I water my lawn?
How much is enough? How much is too much? It all depends on what kind of soil you are working with. For instance, sandy soil will require more water than a clay soil that doesn’t drain as quickly. Another thing to keep in mind is the amount of shade your yard gets. Less sun means less watering.
To keep a lawn healthy and green, it will need about one inch of water per week.
When should I water my lawn?
If you’re lucky enough to have an irrigation system, it’s recommended to run the system two or three times a week, preferably early morning, before sunrise. It’s impossible for me to tell you how long to water each zone, without seeing your lawn first; it really depends on the soil texture (sand, sandy loam, clay, etc)
Those of you using a sprinkler and hose (not fun!) will need to turn it on and forget about it for an hour or so, until you need to move it somewhere else. Luckily, I don’t have to mess with that anymore! An irrigation system is the way to go.
I know there are people who say the more water the better, but let me ask you, what would happen if you stuck your head under water and never came up for air? Well…the same goes for your lawn. A lawn breathes too. Don’t drown it!
Remember, water your lawn for a longer period of time, less times per week. It will save you water and your lawn will love you for it! Think of it as a long cool drink after a hard day’s work.
