We first worked with the Ventosas back in 2007, when they hired us to do some stonework and plantings in their front yard. But it was in 2011 that they really decided to get down to business, bringing the swimming pool restoration team in for a complete backyard makeover.
The Ventosas have had a pool for more than 20 years that’s always been a focal point of the backyard, but it was almost unusable in a lot of ways. The original layout was a poor use of space, and the concrete and stone areas were uneven, making it a pretty unsafe environment for entertaining.
We have plenty of opportunities to work with blank canvases – once empty lots to new swimming pool construction projects – but we don’t often get to do a Cinderella-style transformation of this magnitude.
We completed the project in two phases. First, we relocated the pool equipment and installed new pool coping, a patio, retaining wall and new steps out of the house. We rebuilt the fence and installed plants and landscape lighting around the pool, too.
The second phase of the project was the walkway behind their all-season room, new walls and steps into the basement, and a patio off the side of the all-season room.
It was a huge project, and the stonework was a big part of it. The Ventosas wanted a simple look that was light on plantings and heavy on sleekly designed and usable space. We used stone from Techo-Bloc: Blu pavers, Bullnose coping, Manchester wall stone and Rocka steps.
Our swimming pool renovators faced the typical challenges any landscaping team in this area would have faced last summer: We had quite a bit of rain, and because the Ventosas’ backyard elevation is higher than the road out front, we had machinery and trucks stuck in the mud more than a few times.
But the other challenge was one we set ourselves up for: We wanted to keep the pool area as clear and safe as possible so they could still go swimming and enjoy their backyard when we weren’t working. This was not easy!
The backyard looks completely different, and it’s a great place to entertain now. The Ventosas are thrilled; they’ve wanted to do this project for a while, and once we’d wrapped it up, they looked at each other and asked why they’d waited so long. We love to hear that!
